ITINERARY

Here is a day-by-day description of the tour:

Day 1 – Arrival in Port Moresby – Welcome to Papua New Guinea
Arrival in Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea, a city set between lush hills and the Coral Sea. Upon arrival, meet your tour leader at the hotel in the afternoon. In the evening, enjoy a welcome dinner and reception, where the local guide will introduce the journey ahead and share the first stories about this fascinating land.

Day 2 – Into the Highlands: Goroka and the Coffee Trail
A domestic flight takes us over the forest-covered mountains to Goroka, in the heart of the Eastern Highlands. We visit Wanima Village, where daily life unfolds among thatched houses and cooking fires. Later, we explore local coffee plantations, where beans are hand-picked and roasted on site—the rich aroma fills the air and whets our appetite for more discoveries.

Day 3 – Ceremonies and Traditional Crafts
We take part in the Henganofi Bride Price Ceremony, a colorful tribal ritual involving the symbolic exchange of pigs, shells, and traditional goods. We also witness the making of bilums—handwoven string bags with unique patterns—and traditional baskets crafted from natural fibers. The day ends with music and dances passed down through generations.

Day 4 – Legendary Tribes of Wahgi Valley
We travel overland through the green landscapes of the Highlands to Mt Hagen and Wahgi Valley. Here, we encounter some of Papua New Guinea’s most iconic tribes: the Asaro Mudmen, with their haunting clay masks; the Bone Men, painted in striking white body art; and the Huli Wigmen, known for their ornate wigs made from their own hair. Each encounter offers a rare glimpse into ways of life untouched by modern times.

Day 5 – Into the Sepik Jungle: Karawari River
A private charter flight takes us into the remote Sepik region, accessible only by air. We arrive at Karawari Lodge, perched on a ridge overlooking the river and rainforest. In the afternoon, we visit a nearby village frozen in time, where locals show us how they prepare sago, their staple food, extracted from palm tree trunks through a labor-intensive process.

Day 6 – River Journey and Sacred Spirit Houses
We set off on a river cruise along the Karawari, navigating through jungle waterways and stopping in isolated villages. We visit small schools with simple wooden benches and see the striking Spirit Houses, decorated with totemic art and used for male initiation ceremonies. Local woodcarvers demonstrate how ancestral myths are brought to life through their intricate sculptures.

Day 7 – Return to the Capital
A private charter returns us to Mt Hagen, where we catch a connecting flight back to Port Moresby. We explore the city’s highlights: Hanuabada Village, built on stilts over the sea; the National Parliament, blending modern design with tribal motifs; and the National Museum, home to a remarkable collection of masks, artifacts, and traditional art that tells the story of the island’s diverse cultures. The evening is free to enjoy at your leisure. You may choose to dine at one of the city’s restaurants, where you can sample fresh seafood or contemporary Papua New Guinean cuisine.

Day 8 – Departure
Depending on your flight schedule, today marks the end of the adventure. You may choose to extend your stay in Port Moresby to further explore the city at your own pace.
